THIS WAR ON IMMIGRANTS REPORT WILL COVER:
(1) The economics of detention
The impact of the Obama administration’s unfulfilled promises to push for immigration reform and the failure of the DREAM Act was made doubly cruel when the rate of deportations hit a record high, with nearly 400,000 people being deported in FY2010 alone. By almost any measure, the increased number of deportations of immigrants has been an incredible boon for the private prison industry. With DHS’s budget for FY2011 at $64 billion, we ask who is making the money on the backs of our people? To speak to this and other aspects of the private prison industry, tonight we will be speaking with Daniel Carrillio from Enlace, a strategic alliance of low-wage worker centers, unions, and community organizations in Mexico and in the U.S. We will also be speaking with Alix Nguefack from American Friends Service Committee about plans to build an enormous new detention facility in New Jersey. We will explore the movement responses to the detention issue and the way forward.
(2)Is Islamophobia, the new McCarthyism?
This Friday, the New York Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs will hold the all day hearing at its office in New York City entitled “Reviewing our Preparedness: An Examination of New York’s Public Protection Ten Years After September 11.” Scheduled speakers include the controversial Nonie Darwish, Ed Kowalski, and Frank Gaffney and Rep. Peter King (R-NY) who recently chaired Congressional Hearings of a similar nature. What is behind this mainstreaming of xenophobia? Immigrant Rights activist Betsy Palmieri of the Mid Hudson Coalition is calling on her own State Senator Greg Ball to stop demonizing immigrants in the name of security. Senator Ball represents a Westchester district with changing demographics but instead of embracing change he is promoting fear. As a guest on the show she will be joined by Hussein Rashid, working with Religion Dispatches, who will discuss the professionalization of Islamophobia that can been seen through these hearings.

WAR ON IMMIGRANTS REPORT: Keeping the Pressure on: Resistance by targeted communities!
With the cruel resumption of deportations to Haiti by the Obama administration Haitians throughout the country have been organizing to resist this inhumane policy. Join us tonight as we will be speaking with Jerry Poulard and Frantz Gedinez, two Haitian activists fighting to remain with their families. They will detail their work to resist deportation to Haiti. They will also address the initiation of the “Secure Communities” program in Rockland County, NY a Haitian hub. “Secure Communities” will means all people in criminal custody will have their fingerprints checked at booking against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FBI databases to determine their immigration and criminal histories. The result: noncitizens in jails will be put on a conveyor belt into the deportation system from a criminal arrest.
From Haitian resistance to resisting Islamphobia. Today March 3rd public hearings were to be held on changes to Bridgewater Township zoning laws that would prevent the building of Al Falah Islamic Center from being built. Though last night we received word that this troubling vote has been postponed and rescheduled for Monday, March 14, Muslim activists in the tristate area remain committed to making sure that freedom of worship is protected as a fundamental right. We interview Community leader Debbie Almontaser, Board Chair of Muslim Consultative Network and noted NYC educator, about recent news concerning the anti Arab and anti Muslim movement in our area that has targeted so many institutions as well as persons like herself. We will also Interview Cyrus McGoldrick the new Civil Rights Coordinator for Council on Islamic Relations CAIR NY as well as Shaikh Ubaid who directs the Muslim Peace Coalition, about how next week’s Congressional hearings on “Muslim Community Radicalization” are shaping up. Is this a political witch hunt –a new House UnAmerican Activities Committee– or is that just hype? They will share their assessments of the players involved and the challenges ahead.
